CineCritical Pick O' the Week - March 18

Siobhan rather ingeniously introduced us to a new feature at CineCritical, the Pick O' the Week. It is a fun way to look at new releases in theatres and on DVD, some of our favourite television shows, and of course those old movies we just love revisiting. Siobhan's pick last week of Justified (and further prodding in person) prompted me to start watching the show. I can tell you that I am hooked! But I will be spending most of my weekend watching March Madness! Yet without further interruption, I shall offer you my picks of the week.

  • In theatres: Incendies "Incendies is the the most acclaimed Canadian film of 2010, having won eight Genie Awards (the Canadian Oscar) and receiving a much deserved nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards..." Read more.

  • At home: In Bruges In honour of Saint Patrick's Day, I suggest Martin McDonagh's Irish black comedy. I love a black comedy and In Bruge features great interplay between Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson with a great supporting performance from Ralph Fiennes. Available on Netflix.

  • On TV: Party Down From the creator of Veronica Mars (a CineCritical favourite) comes this quirky comedy about a group of caterers. It stars Adam Scott, Ken Marino, Ryan Hansen, Lizzy Caplan and Jane Lynch (whose role on Glee made her unavailable for season 2, and she was replaced by Megan Mullally).

  • Retro re-watch: The Grifters "The Grifters, Stephen Frears' 1990 thriller, combines two of my favourite actresses and one of my favourite film genres. Annette Bening and Anjelica Huston are sublime in this terrific noir.." Also available on Netflix. Read more.
