Pick O' the Week - May 6

It is once again my turn to make this week's picks and with that in mind I wanted to make some mama-centric choices. Unfortunately there really aren't any good Mom-Coms in theaters this week so I'm going with the film I'm most interested in...

In Theatres: Thor promises exactly what I like in a summer blockbuster, and that is mindless action with the occasional humourous moment. Packed chock full of all stars like Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman, and with supporting characters that I know from some smaller films I enjoyed (see Kat Dennings in Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist) we may see a more nuanced film than I would expect. But really I'd just like to see him smash things with the hammer.

At Home: Because I Said So is a cute one starring Mandy Moore, Diane Keaton, Lauren Graham and Piper Perabo as a family of women trying to live while under the shadow of their matriarch. The ever fabulous Ms Keaton does a bang zip job as the interfering mother and Moore does an acceptable job as the lead. Sweet and light, this is something you can curl up with mom and watch together. Want something a bit more challenging? Try Mother and Child, which Matt reviewed on the FFFurbelow here.

On Television: Modern Family is one of the most talked about shows of recent years and it's no wonder with characters like these. Nuanced, silly, alternately hilarious and-- well-- hilarious, this comedy is surprisingly relatable and ultimately positive. Give it a try, it's got something for everyone.

Retro Re-watch: All that Heaven Allows. I remember watching this film in school, about a thirty-something widow who finds love with a construction man after her husband's death. The way the kids treat their mother in this film will make you want to all your mother and apologize for anything you've ever done. Bonus: Roc Hudson was a dreamboat ;)
