Took 'The Trip' and liked it...

Friday night I had the pleasure of checking out The Trip starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon.  The film follows fictional versions of both actors as they take a Food critics' trip across the north of England and through the famed Lake District (home of celebrated poets such as Coleridge and Wordsworth).  Shot as a sort of heightened reality show the film follows the Coogan/Brydon expedition as Coogan's relationship with his long distance girlfriend continues to deteriorate and Brydon insists on making light of every aspect of their trip.

If you're not a fan of extended "talking head" scenes then this movie may not be for you.  But if you are entertained by the intricacies and inane result of human interaction then this may well be your movie.  The true strength of this film is in the short bursts of absolute hilarity brought on by the interaction between these two actors who are clearly very comfortable with one another.  One gag (which can be seen in part in the trailer) involves them repeatedly trying to one up each other in the impressions department.  Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins, Michael Caine and others frequently join them during their meals and proceed to argue with each other loudly and without reserve.

I found out, shortly after seeing the film, that it's actually an amalgam of a television series of the same name in which each of the days of their trip is one episode.  Now that I've seen the film I don't think I'll be able to really enjoy the television program but the one thing I would say about the film is that it did feel a little repetitive at times.  This suggests to me that had I been watching the series instead, the fact that it was broken up into daylong episodes might have helped.

If you have some time this is certainly a film worth checking out, though it does depend heavily on whether you find the Coogan/Brydon schtick engaging

My rating: 3 out of 4

  1. "In the Loop" was also an extension of a British TV series. I loved that movie. One of the funniest I have seen in a long time. And it had the girl from My Girl!
