Quick Look: Homeland

Homeland follows Carrie Anderson (Claire Danes) a CIA analyst living in Washington DC as she strives to prevent a terrorist attack.  The twist?  The perpetrator may be American War hero Marine Sergent Scott Brody, who has just returned after 8 years of captivity.  Based on an Isreali show originally entitled Hatufim (also known as Prisoners of War) the series takes place in Washington with flashes of past events in Iraq.  It starts off strong with a pilot episode that not only calls our heroine's mental stability into question but forces us to feel sympathy for the presumed enemy and his family.  Both heartbreaking and at times tense, the pilot episode manages to answer all the obvious questions, while leaving us with even more unanswered ones.  Added bonus: secondary characters include Mandy Patinkin (the only reason I ever watched an episode of Criminal Minds) and Morena Baccarin (who will always have a little piece of my heart for being in Firefly).

The series airs Sundays at 10pm on Showtime.
