Pick O' The Week - November 11

A slightly delayed post for Remembrance Day. It is a very special day - 11/11/11 - the only time in our lifetime when all six digits will be the same! It is also my dear brother's 25th birthday. Happy Birthday Cameron! It has been a very busy time at school, so my reviews for La piel que habito and Martha Marcy May Marlene will be delayed.

In Theatres: Lars von Trier's Melancholia hits theatres today in Toronto. It also happens to be von Trier's eleventh feature film! I saw the film at the Toronto International Film Festival, and I enjoyed it with a few reservations... but two months later I am still analyzing the film in my head. Kirsten Dunst, who won Best Actress at Cannes, definitely delivers a career-best performance.
At Home: J.J. Abram's Star Trek reboot is the eleventh film in the Star Trek franchise. It was a great science fiction film that introduced Star Trek to a new generation. Star Trek also won the Academy Award for Best Makeup.

On TV: In 2011, Peter Dinklage won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Drama Series for Game of Thrones. The fantastic HBO series, based on Frank R.R. Martin's book series A Song of Fire and Ice, finished its first season in June and we are eagerly anticipating its return in April 2012. If you have not yet seen it, please watch it. And if you have, watch it again!

Retro Re-watch: Stardust Memories is Woody Allen's eleventh film. The 1980 film is shot in black and white, and while Allen considers it one of his best films, his fans are equally divided. I ranked it 21st on my list of Allen films. It is a good film and well worth watching, if only for the clever allusions to Allen's own career.
