Pick O' The Week - March 23

It has been a pretty unremarkable news week. It must be the post-March Break letdown. The Toronto Public Library is on strike, Bobbi Kristina might be in a relationship with her adopted brother, and Mary J. Blige still has not announced a 2012 tour!

The film gods are only allowing for one major wide release this weekend: The Hunger Games! Advance ticket sales have been ridiculous.

This weekend also marks the long-awaited return of TV's Mad Men, after nearly a year and a half off the air. Welcome back, Joan!

This weekend also marks a momentous event in Siobhan's life. Needless to say, on this weekend I will be trying to comfort myself watching Will & Grace reruns (particularly the season two opener when Grace moves out!!!! and hosts a picnic-style dinner party).

In Theatres: I have read all three novels in Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games trilogy. I was more-than-slightly miffed when Jennifer "Bland" Lawrence was cast as heroine Katniss Everdeen. Some of the other casting choices have left me questioning director Gary Ross' choices, but the trailers (all found here) have impressed me.

At Home: Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox deals with a father (voiced by George Clooney) looking for a new home for his family in order to have a better life. It is Anderson's first adaptation and first animated film. The film is wonderfully touching and contains Anderson's trademark satirical humour. It is available on Netflix.

On TV: As much as I love Will & Grace and its many moving house-themed episodes, I am choosing AMC's Mad Men. The series has won four consecutive Emmys for its brilliant depiction of the 1960s. And AMC released this teaser a few weeks ago! Season five stars Sunday on AMC.

Retro Re-watch: Another pick in honour of Siobhan: Woody Allen's classic Annie Hall. The 1977 film won Oscars for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress for Diane Keaton, in a role that was tailor made for her quirky personality. We may no longer be living together, but you still have unlimited access to my DVD collection!
