Pick O' the Week - June 15

Well well, here we are, another week has gone by in the blink of an eye but this time we do have a little to show for it.  While it has been mixed reviews for Ridley Scott's Prometheus, the film and Matt's new favourite Moonrise Kingdom certainly herald a new season of movies that may be worth your time (though they couldn't quite knock the slack jawed wonder off the box office).  Revenge films seem to be the new 'it' genre with Josh Brolin is set to star in the remake of South Korean Old Boy, and (as Matt mentioned last week) Django Unchained creeping closer to theatres every day.

In other casting news, Phillip Seymour Hoffman is reportedly being courted for the role of Pluto Heavensbee in Catching Fire (the sequel to this year's breakout hit The Hunger Games) and writer Neal Stephenson stars in two videos discussing his desire to create a game with accurate swordplay.  And finally, for Matt we have the following promo video for Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom starring narrator and, "librarian for the township of New Penzance where the story takes place," Bob Balaban.  Do you like to read?  If so, click on.

And now for the Picks!

In Theatres: Well, since Matt's pick last week was Moonrise Kingdom I'm afraid it cannot be chosen and while Rock of Ages may be opening this week it's almost certain to be a waste of your time.  So I propose Prometheus, which may be getting a slight lower than expected rating from the general public but is still getting decent reviews from the top critics.  I haven't had the pleasure but let us know what you think!

At Home:  In honour of the "auteur" directors in this week's other categories and due to an onset of musicality I've just stumbled across, this week's Pick is Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge.  While I truly can't stand Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor is always a good reason to watch a film and the musical numbers in this are stunning.  Special mention goes to the whores and stagehands' rendition of Roxanne and to the random Nirvana hook in the club scene.

On TV:  Well it's no secret that I'm a staunch supporter of Canadian film and television and in the last few years we've had a few international hits on our hands.  With that in mind Showcase's Continuum debuted two weeks ago to unheard of ratings and upon taking a look at the pilot this week I've decided that it has some places to go.  While the lead actress needs to relax into the role the setup seems enough that there are many places this thing could go before the end.  So take a few moments to check out episodes 1-3 and see what you think.

Retro Re-watch:  Jurassic Park because I just discovered the worst proposal video ever via Jurassic Park Marriage Proposal and it made me think, "Well geeze, this video aside that was a good movie."  So get out your VCR and that old dusty copy of the movie and watch a pre-Glee Geoff Goldbloom try to seduce Laura Dern with all his book learnin'.  Oh and there are dinosaurs too. You're welcome.
