Pick O' the Week - Sept 21

Okay so the impromptu hiatus two weeks ago was my fault.  There's no excuse, I just forgot but with the lack of truly stimulating movies coming to theatres this summer you can't REALLY blame me, can you?

This week we got news about a possible Indiana Jones 5 (say it ain't so!), Roman Polanski will be adapting another play for the big screen and teaser trailer claiming to officially confirm Kill Bill: vol 3 was released (I have my doubts).  In other news, TIFF has wrapped for another year with Silver Linings Playbook taking the audience choice award and we have a brand new trailer for The Hobbit (now with 50% more humour).

And so, on to the picks!

In Theatres:  The Master's release date has been moved up and the film is out this weekend! Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, the film follows the developing relationship between a disenfranchised drifter and a cult leader in the 1950's.  Based loosely on the origins of Scientology the film boasts not only these two heavy hitters but supporting performances from Amy Adams and Laura Dern.  So far it has a 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, we'll see if the rating goes down after this weekend but I'm excited!

At Home:  New releases this week include the well regarding The Cabin in the Woods as well as The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel neither of which are particularly interesting to me.  Trailers have recently been released for Zero Dark Thirty, and as the follow up it got me thinking about her 2009 oscar-winning The Hurt Locker which is available on Netflix and definitely worth a watch.  And if you're still on a TIFF high and looking for a less mainstream film to check out, find yourself a copy of her earlier film (and my favourite) starring Angela Basset: Strange Days.  It is a thriller only the 90's could have borne...

On TV: I find that lately I've been having trouble coming up with an answer to the television choice for picks of the week.  There are plenty of watchable shows out there but truly great TV is something that only comes along every once in awhile.  To that end I'm suggesting an oldie, but a goodie: The X-Files!  Come on!  Pre-Californication/sex-addiction Duchovny?  Gillian Anderson?  With rumors abounding that they are now an item, it's time to revisit this classic Friday night thriller.

Retro Re-Watch:  This week's retro re-watch is an easy one, brought on by the two recent projects that deal specifically with this film.  Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, starring one Ms. Tippi Hedren as the San Fran Socialite intent on pursuing Rod Taylor's man-meat across the state.  What she ends up with is somewhat more than she bargained for.  With Hitchcock (starring Anthony Hopkins) and The Girl  (starring Toby Jones) it seems like a great time to re-acquaint ourselves with the source material.
